When do you need the certificate?
Since June 2026 the new Foreigners Act (Zakon o strancima) requires many people from non-EU countries to prove A1.1 Croatian. Here's what you should know:
- A1.1 Croatian + Latin script to renew your work and residence permit after your first year in Croatia.
- Proof of Croatian also counts toward permanent residence after five years of continuous stay.
- The exam covers everyday situations: introducing yourself, shopping, taking the bus, going to the doctor — no fluent conversation needed.
- The employer often covers the exam cost. Finishing a recognised A1.1 course gives you a certificate at the required level.
- Exempt are, among others, people who completed school or university in Croatia and some native speakers of South-Slavic languages.
As of June 2026. What exactly applies to your case depends on your status — always check the official information from the Ministry of the Interior (MUP).
